Recruiting for the NorCal SFATA Chapter

I went to get my hair cut and colored by the amazing Kathleena Gorga today. My husband doesn’t usually come with me to Berkeley unless he has a serious jones for Gioia pizza, but this time he had some errands on that side of town. He needed to talk to Geoff Braithewaite from Tasty Vapor about the NorCal chapter of SFATA (the Smoke-Free Alternatives Trade Association) that they’re forming with some of the local vapor product vendors, and he wanted to talk to the owners of Delux Vapor in Berkeley.

Delux was the only vape shop represented at the disastrous (from the perspective of vapers, anyway) Berkeley City Council meeting on July 8th–the same evening that I spent trapped in possibly the most tedious Oakley City Council meeting I have ever attended, and that’s saying something. It must have been a very long council meeting in Berkeley, too, because the SMOKE Act was item number 25 on the consent agenda.

If you want to be outraged, you can watch the video in its entirety. It includes such gems as the comparison of e-cigarettes to cluster bombs and the assertion that propylene glycol causes asthma.

Anyway, John from Delux Vapor was there, but wasn’t able to make much of a dent in the ravings of the anti-nicotine/tobacco zealots. They were well-prepared, if not well-informed. Since the ordinance was tabled until the September meeting, we wanted to see whether we’d be able to offer some support then, and also to find out whether Delux would be interested in joining the new NorCal SFATA chapter, the better to ultimately hire experienced, professional support.

So we drove over to Delux and had a nice talk with Rick, the owner. Rick’s mission is to help people quit smoking, but he wants to support the cause. Business owners always have to balance their extracurricular activities and community contributions against the need to run the business–it was no different when I was running the Oakley Chamber of Commerce.

I took a few photos while we were there.

Eventually we moved on to Embarcadero Cove in Oakland and dropped in at Tasty Vapor:

We’re looking forward to the Anniversary Party and Vape Meet on August 2nd. Send any vapers you know their way!
